Today health care for Americans is provided by different legal entities existing in US. The health care system in US mainly relies on private and nonprofit health insurance organizations. In public sector health insurance is mostly provided by government with around 60-65% part contributed by programs.
One of the primary concerns for United States is number of people without health insurance. As per the recent study shown by American Journal of Public Health, people who have no health insurance in US are not able to get medical care on time.They possess 40 percent more risk of death in a year compared to those who have proper health insurance coverage in the same year. Over last few years, the major insurance companies in US have gone through major restructuring in the form of mergers, which resulted in highly concentrated health insurance market in today’s time. Today, out of millions of Americans, 52% people got coverage through their employer, 5% have private non-group coverage, 27% have protection under Medicare or Medicaid plans and more than 15% are uninsured. The premium allocated for given health insurance coverage changes mainly from state to state. In Iowa, the average annual premium is $6,630, while in New York it is $2,606.
In all states of US, an individual who wants to purchase health insurance must go through the process of medical underwriting. Currently, insurance companies in US look for lower adverse selection ratio and gives high emphasis on managing their risk for pre-existing conditions. Many leading companies in US pay high cost for their employees’ health care that puts them at a highly competitive position. US spend more than 17% of GDP on health care as compared to other countries which spend less than 9%.
Health care issues have a direct impact on viability of American Dream, because enough health care and adequate insurance are important for development of responsible citizen and it is government’s responsibility to look after it. It is necessary to implement a federal health care policy effectively in order to make health reforms more feasible, which ultimately contributes in developing strong foundation for the economy.
